From Past to Present
Wests initially originated as the local Campbelltown City Kangaroos Club in 1970. In August of 1974, the Club was renamed Campbelltown City League Club, with a vision of not only supporting the Campbelltown City Kangaroos Rugby League Football Club, but also to encourage community sporting events throughout the local Macarthur region.
In 1987 the Club was officially renamed; Western Suburbs League Club. The name originated from the move of the Western Suburbs Rugby League Football Club to the Campbelltown area and the shift of Club ownership by Wests League Club at Ashfield. In 1996 a local board was subsequently elected, assembling Wests to be the Club it is today.
Wests, known as the Home of Sport in the local region, has been committed to encouraging sporting activities amongst children and young adults since the inception of the Wests Sports Council in 1999 (with origins in 1995). Wests prides itself on providing sports teams with annual sponsorships, donations and recreational support to inspire the game of sport. The Club offers members and guests the opportunity to enjoy an extensive range of live sporting events in our multiple sports bars and 160″ big screen in Bambu.
Wests took over the Tennis Club in 2007 and effectively turned it into a successful operation, where members have access to multiple tennis courts, a tennis shop, function room and a popular Chinese Restaurant. The Tennis Club offers an assortment of tennis competitions and games to all ages and skill levels including social tennis, hot shots, cardio tennis, and school holiday clinics in an effort to inspire children and adults to play the game of tennis.
Following the successful conquest of the Tennis Club, Wests amalgamated with Lakeside Golf Club Camden, located on Raby Road in Catherine Field. Lakeside is classified as the best public golf course in the South West, judged one of the top five courses in Sydney and rated 16th in NSW. Lakeside Golf Club is a par 72 course of 6,400 meters and the only course in Sydney to be designed by five times British Open Winner Pete Thomson. Major improvements to the course are underway and once completed shall include 18 new greens and a new irrigation system.
In the same year, Wests amalgamated with Country Club, located in Gledswood Hills. Country Club Gledswood Hill is currently undergoing extensive renovations to offer a sophisticated and modern club experience for our members. The Country Club is a fully licensed venue and now offers a unique dining experience, a platinum TAB & sports bar, beer garden, alfresco area and a small function room. The Country Club is proud to be the Home of the GWS GIANTS since 2015 by financially supporting the team, as well as showing live games every week throughout the AFL premiership seasons.
Currently, in 2017 Wests League Club is proud to announce a membership base of 65,000 + members. To match this membership base, we are continuously investing in outlets to improve our Clubs services and offer members a range of entertainment options, with a continued focus on the game of sport in the Macarthur region and beyond.
