Lakeside Golf Club Camden’s Ladies have won the Coronation Medal for the first time since its inception in NSW, back in 1909.

The Coronation Medal has become one of NSW women’s golf’s most prestigious events.

The Coronation Medal was donated by the English Ladies Golf Union to celebrate the Coronation of King Edward V11 and is an 18-hole stroke handicap competition for teams of four players on handicaps from plus to 20.0.

Contested over two courses, which are determined by the previous year’s competition. The Medal is awarded to the team with the best combined aggregate of four nett scores.

This year’s comp was played at Lakeside Golf Club Camden and last year’s winning team’s home course, Randwick Golf Club.

There were 200 golfers from 50 clubs across NSW that braved the blisteringly cold winds for the chance to take home the prestigious medal, however in the end it was our very own Lakeside team that won the day.

Lakeside’s team of team of Tracey Wood, Donna Forrest, Lyn Hall and Jan Jacka had a combined score of 303, two shots ahead of runners up Concord Golf Club.

Wood and Forrest had an 81 and 82 nett at their home club of Lakeside, whilst their teammates, Hall and Jacka had 69 and 71 nett as they represented Lakeside at the Randwick Course.

The ladies had quite a challenge on the course as the day was plagued by icy winds. “I kept thinking, don’t let the awful conditions get to you, the scores won’t be good, just keep going!” stated Lyn Hall at the Randwick Course.

Ms Forrest, who was at Lakeside stated, “My thought process during (after having a 9 on the 2nd hole I played) was purely, you have to hold it together for your teammates! That and nothing else ran through my mind for the rest of the day!”

It was a close match in chilling conditions, but in the end the ladies managed a two-shot lead to win the day.

“I couldn’t believe it,” stated Karen Hansen, Wests Group Macarthur’s Executive Assistant to CEO and Lakeside Pro Shop Administrator, “we’ve never won it before, and I was just about to get going for the day, thinking it was all over, when we realised that our ladies had the win within reach.”

“When we were told we had the lead we got a wine and cruiser with that while Lyn did the numbers on the back of a napkin, eliminating our opposition one at a time. Then we made it, smiles and hugs and of course the champagne, a great day for the team and the club,” stated Jan Jacka at the Randwick Course.

Tracey Wood, Donna Forrest, Lyn Hall and Jan Jacka are all long standing members of Lakeside Golf Club Camden and represent the club throughout the year in Ladies Pennants.

Ms Hansen stated, “The ladies played incredibly well and we congratulate them on their achievement”.
